Two Die, Nasarawa Poly Shut, As Students Protest Death Of Colleague See Photos
Pandemonium rocked the Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia, on Wednesday after a protest turned tragic, two students reportedly killed while several others injured.
Reports gathered that it all started when an ND 2 student of Accountancy department was knocked down and killed by a vehicle using one way on Tuesday.
The aggrieved students, on Wednesday, blocked the main road in a peaceful protest demanding the state government to install speed bumps on the road.
The protest reportedly took another dimension when the security operatives called to calm the scene reportedly teargas and bullets in the air and at the students.
Speaking to newsmen, the Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the Student Union Government (SUG), Jafaru Habibu, explained that “the incident has been reoccurring in the school for sometime because we have lost a lot of students and this sparked a lot of reactions from students and we decided to embark on a peaceful protest.”
”While they were protesting the loss of their student on the Lafia- Akwanga highway, the police shot two of their students of which one died instantly while the other one has been rushed to the hospital.
”We are always paying all the fees the institution ask us to pay so they should also meet our demands, government has continued to turn deaf ears to our plea of constructing bumps along the school road,” he added.
The Registrar of the Polytechnic, Labani Joseph, said that the management had earlier appealed to the students to shelve their protest and go back to class saying that the management of the institution promised to look into the matter but the students paid deaf ears to their pleas.
He explained that, when the protest got to its peak, they had to invite the security operatives to calm down the situation, which led to the gun duel between the students and security operatives.
The Registrar, however, pronounced that, the school has been closed down indefinitely as a result of the crises.
These Are The List of Nigerians That Will Be Executed In Indonesia By Firing Squad On July 29
Indonesia is all set to carry out its next round of executions on Friday, 29 July, which will include several foreign nationals.
A Pakistani embassy official has reportedly said that one of those is a Pakistani national.
The country, which faced international criticism after executing 14 prisoners in January and April 2015 – most of whom were found guilty of drug peddling, has 16 more prisoners on its list for this year.
The Friday execution will be carried out by firing squad and will include a citizen of Nigeria and one of Zimbabwe, in addition to the Pakistani prisoner.
Syed Zahid Raza, charge d’affaires at the Pakistani embassy in capital Jakarta, told Reuters on Tuesday, 26 July, that the Indonesian attorney general’s office invited him to meet with their officials.
He was then informed about the imminent execution of Zulfikar Ali, convicted of smuggling drugs, when the fresh round of executions take place on Friday.
The diplomat, however, said that Ali will make one last attempt to escape capital punishment by appealing for clemency directly to Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
Pakistan has reportedly requested Indonesia to stay Ali’s execution, arguing that his 2005 trial was unfair.
But Indonesia is determined to crack down on drug traffickers saying the country is facing a “drugs emergency” and thus, they will show no mercy to the offenders.
Meanwhile, Noor Rochmad, Junior Attorney General for public crime affairs in Indonesia, was quoted by Antara News as saying on Monday (25 July) that the office would announce the date and number of inmates to be executed once those details are finalised.
The executions are due to take place at a maximum security prison on Nusakambangan Island in Central Java, Reuters reported, adding that those likely to face the death penalty this week include citizens of France, Britain and the Philippines.
Indonesia’s online news website Tempo reported on Tuesday that 14 death row prisoners convicted in drug trafficking cases have already been moved to an isolation cell in Batu Penitentiary in the Nusakambangan Island.
They were moved in the isolation cell around 10pm local time on Monday (25 July). “There are 14 people.
Two from Pasir Putih Penitentiary, two from Kembang Kuning Penitentiary, one from Besi Penitentiary, and nine from Batu Penitentiary,” one source in Batu Penitentiary told the news portal.

3 Things That Is Going To Happen Now That Adekunle Gold Has Released His Debut Album
Finally! (Nigeria’s version of Justin Bieber according to a colleague of mine)Adekunle Gold blessed us with the release of his debut album aptly titled ‘Gold’.
Even though he tried to pull ‘Beyoncé’ on us, the album has been received well by fans and critics alike. But what does the release of this long awaited album mean for our industry that has seen in recent times a decline in the release of full projects by new artistes this year?
So far, Adekunle, Lil Kesh and Kiss Daniel remain the only new acts to have put up an album in 2016 at the time of writing this article.
Here are some of my predictions on what to expect in the next couple of months
We will have Adekunle Mania for the next month or so
From all indications, everybody loves Adekunle Gold. And now that he has a full body of work out, be rest assured you will hear and see his name everywhere – at least on radio and on social media.
I just know whatever plaudits Mr Gold gets on this album, he truly deserves it. You have to admire the guts of the man. Like Joey Akan (music editor at Pulse) rightly stated, “Adekunle Gold worked his way through the right channels, identified a sound, and released a debut single titled ‘Let It Stop’, a song about peace for the nation. That never became a hit song.
The right channel did not pay instantly, but he kept at it, working his game and perfecting his art. What worked was option E: A beautiful rendition of One Direction’s ‘Story Of My Life’ which he titled ‘Sade’. ‘Sade’ is credited to be the propelling force of Adekunle Gold’s career. “
We will see a rise in ‘Adekunle Gold type music’
Since most of our musicians suffer from what I’ve termed copy – copy syndrome, expect the really lazy ones to put out singles done in typical Adekunle Gold fashion. Now, a little borrowed inspiration is not bad but copying a beat, its rhythm and almost every other thing is just wrong!
We get it; Nigerians seem to be warming up to alternative musicians (not saying Adekunle Gold is one) but if you must follow the same road as Adekunle, find a way to carve a niche for yourself. I mean Brymo and Adekunle sound somewhat similar but each musician has an identity readily identifiable by music lovers the world over.
We will see other new acts spring into action
You know all those new acts that have kept us guessing on when their debut albums would drop, they will start running upandan to release their projects. Some may even go as far as releasing ‘leaks’ from the album if their record label is dragging its feet. Adekunle has opened up the floodgates.
Patoranking’s album will be released in a couple of days, Reekado Banks has promised to drop his by next month (what has happened to Korede Bello andDi’Ja?), Cynthia Morgan’s album is reportedly over 20 tracks long, Ycee will be announcing his release date anytime soon. These are some of the names that have revealed their album release plans. Why the likes of Niyola, Chidinma andEva haven’t thought it right to release even an EP still surprises me.
Still, let’s give a round of applause to the man of the moment: Adekunle Gold.

Speaking at the train’s main station at Idu, Abuja, Mr. Buhari said the federal government would link all states and commercial centres in the country with rail lines.
The president later took a train ride from Idu to Kubwa, a suburb of Abuja.
Construction of the Abuja-Kaduna rail began under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The project was implemented to an advanced stage before the end of that government.
